Congratulations! Getting a kitten can be a wonderful and delightful experience for you and your family. Getting a healthy kitten is also a long commitment as they can live well into their teens or longer with proper diet and care. There are many considerations to keep in mind and planning a budget for your new kitten is important.
Quality foods, routine veterinary care, toys, cat furniture, litter, litter boxes and grooming supplies can definitely add up. Regardless of where you get your kitten, a rescue, shelter, purebred breeder or a stray they will require the same basic supplies. Whenever you get a kitten with an unknown background there is also the added risk of unknown hereditary defects that may not arise until the kitten is much older. Responsible breeders strive to eliminate hereditary defects and diseases in their kittens and most offer good health guarantees. Even so, it is important to build a savings to cover emergency care.
Another thing to consider is that every person in the family is agreed about getting a kitten and also what type, breed, sex and age. If you rent your home or an apartment does your lease permit pets? If so is there a deposit required? Have you saved up enough to cover it along with the other expenses of getting a new pet?
It is extremely important to buy only from a responsible breeder. Unscrupulous breeders do not care if their kittens live a long and healthy life. Instead these irresponsible breeders disappear after the sale and are often impossible to get in touch with ever again. Because of these irresponsible breeders purebred animals are unfairly associated with problems. It is important to carefully research the breed you are considering, and even more important to research the breeders before you settle on buying a kitten. It is ill advised to rush into purchasing a kitten. A good and responsible breeder will be understanding and helpful as you begin this process.
